The 2007/2008 Village BLOCs
For more information on any BLOC, please contact Dan Sepion.

Alif Laam Meem (ALM)
We will be a resource to all members of the Washington University community that want to learn about any facet of Islam. Furthermore, we will interact with other campus organizations to further increase awareness about the Islamic Faith. ALM members will organize Friday prayers (Jummah) and be a point for Muslims on campus to gather and engage in intellectual debates such as how Muslims can contribute to Western society and the role of Women in Islam.

East Asian Persuasion
We will promote a healthy lifestyle through East Asian culinary and exercise traditions while expanding cultural knowledge.

Fort Music Appreciation
We will explore diverse types and venues of music by organizing group concert attendance, promoting unique music events in the Village and on campus, and collaborating with various student performance groups.

In-House Sports
We will raise money for charity, while leading an entertaining competition of sorts (ping-pong, pool, foosball, etc.) for the people of the Village and others to enjoy. In addition to raising money for charity, we will involve residents in numerous community service events, further supporting our selected charity.

Jew Kids on the Bloc
We will bring cultural and religious diversity to the Village through programming, education, and weekly Shabbat dinners.

Keep A Child Alive
We will raise money for Anti-Retroviral (ARV) treatments for Kenyan children and their families. In addition, we will work to educate our Washington University community about HIV/AIDS and how students can contribute to humanity in this respect.

Latin American Living
We will hold bi-monthly dinners with Latin American studies faculty to discuss Latin American issues, hold media discussions regarding selections of Latin American literature, and offer Salsa lessons/dance parties.

Learning to Bake
We will develop a new skill, while simultaneously giving back to the Village community and the St. Louis community at large. We want to explore the art of baking use these new skills for the benefit of other students and the larger community.

Little India
We will provide fun, relaxing, and unique substance-free activities for the Village. We will host large-scale dance/dinner parties such as Bollywood Dance Parties and Swing Dances. In addition, we will host various other events, highlighting the fun you can have in a substance-free environment.

Multicultural Food and Film
We are a multicultural mix of people, who share interests in food and film. We will explore different varieties of food as well as watch films that raise cultural awareness.

Music Buff
We will help members explore their shared music interest. Although not everyone will have exactly the same tastes in music, the BLOC will allow them to expand their interests and greater appreciate the cultural diversity of the St. Louis music scene. Our members will attend a wide-range of musical events, including but not limited to chamber music events on campus, concerts in the Gargoyle, local performances in St. Louis, and touring music groups in larger venues.

Music Immersion in St Louis
We will immerse ourselves in the St Louis musical scene and promote music education among the Washington University community. Our immersion encompasses a large spectrum of music that includes the modern genres of hip-hop, R&B, alternative rock, and the classic genres of classic rock, gospel, and classical music.

Sports Enthusiasts
We will help organize intramural teams as well as competitive and non-competitive pickup games on campus. Through this, we will promote an active, healthy, and social lifestyle among Village residents. In addition to playing sports, we will attend Washington University and professional sporting events.

Transfer Year & Beyond
We will share our own experiences as successful transfer students with incoming transfers. We want to create a community where any new student feels welcomed and finds resources readily available. Members will offer support as the new transfers adjust to their new school, take outings to various cultural events in St. Louis and generally help integrate transfer students into the Village and WU community.
